Design Values

We design technology to help change makers.

We take a risk-informed approach to design. To unlock the highest potential of technology for humanity.

A Risk-Informed Approach: Balance of risk people are willing to take and the connections they need to make; requires a deep understanding of reality and lived experience

Values

  • Inclusive: of viewpoints and perspectives; we are mindful of representation when selecting participants for research and the design process. (to include rural, indigenous, range of education levels, etc.)

    • Inclusive design & localization: supporting indigenous languages, non-reading audiences, cultural/societal norms (WeChat browser, Whatsapp zero rating) - digital reality and connectivity model

  • Context-Informed: Environmentally aware of devices and networks, cultural nuances, legal, etc.

    • In tune with the digital reality and literacy of the target audience.

  • Accessible: easy to grasp, simple, intuitive, easy to use for the general public, non-reading audience, individuals with accessibility limitations.

    • Accessibility implementation plans and design specs positioned for accessibility (what's taken CARE of in design, what's specified, implementation standards)

  • Participatory (people-driven, change-makers influencing): Open design: For the purposes of people participating ; Open design creates channels for more people to participate in the craft.

  • For Public Good: (Benefit public domain: Open design) We are committd to creating for the public good. We do our best to openly share share we've learned and make resources available to those working toward common goals.

Tech for a freer safer world—whether that's alternative technology interventions or adaptations to mature products.

We are for those who dare. The individuals who put their life on the line for change.

Other things to note:

  • How we engage people around technology and alternative interventions

  • We provide in-kind services for Internet Freedom projects via OTF UXD Lab
